That's the whole point. It's just bullshit.

All my interviews have been just lovely. But I'm not gonna lie, the one with Bull is my favorite one so far. I've had the honor of interviewing the entire band, consisting of four men: Tom Beer, Dan Lucas, Kai West and Tom Gabbatiss. We've had a little chat about songwriting, jumping out of windows, autotune and taking the piss out of yourself.

Can you give me a brief description of the band?
We are a band from York, in England. Thats where we're from. We sound a bit like American indie music and a bit like The Beatles. We're like the English Beatles.
So you're from York, but you've recorded your songs in Amsterdam. Why?
We were lucky enough to meet mister Remko Schouten. He did all the live sounds of Pavement, which is one of our favorite bands ever. We met him about two years ago in Berlin, just by chance. He was touring with Spiral Stairs from Pavement and Canshaker Pi. Once we've met all of those guys Canshaker Pi invited us to come play in the Netherlands and Remko invited us to come and record. Spiral Stairs invited us to come play in America. This was the trifecta who caused a very good turnpoint for our band. So yeah that's how we met and came to come record there. We just kept going back to record new songs there because he [Remko] is just so damn good.
Are there any artists that you look up to/are really inspired by?
Well I've already mentioned them but Pavement, big time. They were a big influence on us. Pixies as well probably. I [Tom] like Bob Dylan a lot. And early Greenday, three quarters of us. I'm not so mad on Greenday.
I noticed you have an album called She Looks Like Kim. Why isn't it on Spotify?
We recorded it in 2014 and it's very old. We don't really like how it sounds because the producer used loads of autotune on it. Like I was fucking Rihanna or something. But I'm not Rihanna. I don't like autotune. Anyway, we've also had a lineup change in 2016 or something, and we thought it was maybe better to just put new stuff on there. It's still available on our Bandcamp.

Do you have any big plans for the future?
Our next gig is in York, with a band called Warmduscher. Partly some of their members are in the Fat White Family. We also have this thing in Amsterdam called Bullseye in February or March. We get four bands from the UK and four bands from the Netherlands and we have a big nice time.
Any plans for new songs or an album?
We've got a few more singles that we've recorded with Remko, we'll be releasing those over the next months. The next one due to be released is on the 26th of November, it's called bedroom floor. We'll be releasing that on Spotify and on Youtube with a music video featuring Cees Paris from the band Steve French. It's coming out on Remko's record label. Remko is just such a nice guy. And such a good producer. He's been a big part of all the music we've made in the last couple of years. We thought he's the best person to put it out with because he's a big part of the music.
Any particular reason you're called Bull?
Our friend Liam suggested it. We had a gig coming up and decided we needed a name and Bull seemed as good as any other name.
So no hidden meaning behind it?
Well, if I'm gonna stretch it and try to put some meaning to it... Would you like me to do it? Okay I'm gonna do it. Our band is solely based around having fun. I've been in loads of bands before and I didn't wanna take it seriously at all, ever again. All those bands went like, really fucking over the top with everything and I thought Bull sounds like bullshit. That was the whole point, it's just bullshit. It doesn't matter, it's just music.

Do you have a songwriting process?
Well Kai, say hi Kai (Kai says hello), Kai just wrote a song would you like to tell her about it?
Kai: Well it just comes out. I play some chords and then some words come and it just happens. The hardest bit is finding the nucleus (which means the core, I had to ask & Google as well don't worry). As soon as you find the nucleus you chase it. It all just comes out very easily and naturally. A bit like shit. Then you just put some guitars on it and the rest is rock history.
Tom again: Kai has just written a new song and we just practiced it and play it all together. Same thing happens when I write a song. I tend to write it on my own, I've never written a song with anyone else. I bring it to the band and we play it and if it's a really good one it tends to be really quick and easy for everyone to pick up and play it together. So that's just it.
Have you had any superstar moments?
Kai: I jumped out of a window.
Tom (very casual): Yeah he jumped out of a window.
Kai: It's gonna be in the music video, we filmed it. I was drinking bookfast, Its a Scottish wine.
Tom: It's not wine it's rum.
Kai: Oh yeah. Well it's really strong and has a lot of caffeine in it. So I want a bit loopy. We were in this house and we stayed over. Then there was this really attractive looking bush, and I jumped in it from the window.
Tom: It was very superstar, a bit like The Who. The hedge was underneath the window and we were on the first story, and I don't remember who bu someone said "Do you reckon you could jump out the window?" and Kai said I will do it. So he did it. And he was fine.
What's the golden tip for aspiring musicians?
Don't take it seriously, because it's not serious. Until you do take it seriously, and then take it really seriously. And be honest about what you play. Oh and listen! Listen and focus. Play with people and listen exactly, and put yourself deep inside the sound. And don't fuck around you know, take it seriously. Don't take yourself seriously, but take the music very seriously. The music is not a joke. You're a joke.
